How Dads Affect Their Daughters into Adulthood
So make sure you love your wife the way you want your daughter to be love. Even more important to note, little eyes are always watching and soaking up more than most of us as busy adults can imagine which is why you need to love your wife. Marriage and mommy blogger JthreeNMe captures the essence of this well in a Facebook post that speaks to just how critical your relationship with your spouse is in creating an example for your daughter. That is terrifying. Relationships and marriages are hard, and that is a truth that your daughter will learn one day. They are challenging for all people, including the kindhearted and well-intentioned. The best and probably the hardest thing that you can do for your daughter is to model for her how a woman should be treated. You, and only you, can combat this — by treating her mother well and loving her mother hard. Build up her confidence. Your daughter more than loves her mother; she is enthralled with her.

There’s no downplaying the role of a father in his daughter’s life. He is her first introduction to masculinity, a role model, and the measuring stick for all other men in her life. And although the father-daughter relationship should be one of trust, fun, adventures, and mutual respect, in some cases, it isn’t. The stereotypical overprotective father is, strangely enough, celebrated more often than not. But there are many ways overprotective dads hurt their daughters instead of help them.
Although social media posts about fathers “doing what they gotta do” to protect their daughters go viral, and even hilarious TV commercials promote dads who either don’t trust their daughters or their dates, there isn’t much out there about the negative effects this widely accepted “over bearing father stereotype” will have on daughters. As a mother of two little girls, I’m writing this piece with extreme caution — my desire to protect my daughters is carefully weighed against my desire to raise strong young women.
As the daughter of a father who wasn’t overprotective but still did his best to teach me how to stand up for myself, I’m writing this with a thankful heart. I certainly understand the desire to protect our children from harm, a desire that fathers feel just as strongly.

Inc points out that while overprotective moms might help their child in the short term, their helicopter style of parenting can lead to issues that will follow their child into adulthood. For example, some studies have shown that children with overprotective parents often lack the skills they need for self-regulation and they often struggle with feeling entitled to things as well.
For moms wondering if they are being too overprotective of their child, this list will help them narrow down if they need to land the helicopter or if they are on the right track with their parenting method. This is to be expected if a child is young and does not have full control of his or her fine motor skills just yet. But once they reach a certain age, mom does not need to cut their meal into tiny little pieces just because she is worried that they will wind up having an accident or cut their food into too big of a piece for them to eat.

F or decades, gender norms have been going through seismic changes , but some traditional tropes are apparently hard to undo. In the latest study on how parents interact with their daughters and sons, researchers led by Jennifer Mascaro and her colleagues at Emory University focused on fathers. They recorded random snippets of conversations that a group of 52 fathers with one to three year olds had over a hour period.
The researchers coded the types of words and behavior the fathers were having with their toddlers, and they also took brain scans of the dads as they looked at pictures of their children with happy, sad and neutral facial expressions. In a report published in Behavioral Neuroscience , Mascaro and her team found that fathers tended to use more analytical language when speaking with their daughters than when talking to sons, says Mascaro.
Moms in the study tended to use more emotive language when talking to their daughters compared to their sons, and when they told their girls autobiographical stories, they were richer and fuller of emotional content than the versions they told their sons. Some hypotheses hold that fathers may choose different ways to educate their daughters and sons about emotions.
While they may use language and direct discussions about emotions with their girls, they may chose physical roughhousing as a mode of communication with their boys. Mascaro points out that rough play mimics aggressive actions, and requires accurate reading of social cues to determine when the rough and tumble tickling or fighting has gone too far, or if someone is feeling hurt. Either way, says Mascaro, the results also suggest that fathers can perhaps be made more aware of the fact that they are treating their daughters and sons differently.
With this knowledge, perhaps they will pay more attention to ways in which their interactions might be more egalitarian.

Conversations about the importance of fathers usually revolve around sons: how boys benefit from having a positive male role model, a consistent disciplinarian, and a high-energy roughhousing partner on their way to pursuing career and family success in adulthood. But as recent research shows, fathers also affect the lives of their young adult daughters in intriguing and occasionally surprising ways.
As you might guess, daughters whose fathers have been actively engaged throughout childhood in promoting their academic or athletic achievements and encouraging their self-reliance and assertiveness are more likely to graduate from college and to enter the higher paying, more demanding jobs traditionally held by males. Even college and professional female athletes often credit their fathers for helping them to become tenacious, self-disciplined, ambitious, and successful.
Interestingly, too, when female college students were asked what they would do if their fathers disapproved of their career plans, the overwhelming majority said they would not change their plans. But the daughters who communicated the most comfortably and had the closest relationships with their fathers were more willing to reconsider their plans if their fathers disapproved.
