Helping a Young Adult with Special Needs Develop Dating Skills
Dating, especially during the teenage years, is thought to be an important way for young people to build self-identity, develop social skills, learn about other people, and grow emotionally. Yet new research from the University of Georgia has found that not dating can be an equally beneficial choice for teens. And in some ways, these teens fared even better.
The study, published online in The Journal of School Health , found that adolescents who were not in romantic relationships during middle and high school had good social skills and low depression, and fared better or equal to peers who dated. That is, adolescents who have a romantic relationship are therefore considered ‘on time’ in their psychological development.

I mean, I would argue that there is no bigger choice in our life than who we choose to marry yet most of us are taught virtually no skills on how to get there. They pretty much send us out into the dating world with little or no knowledge of how to attract, treat, or date potential partners. I just wish there was a way to teach our kids relationship skills too, since it is so important to the overall happiness of our lives.
And yes, the tools are out there. Programs like my Conscious Dating Coaching, is just one of the many relationship building platforms that can help us learn these skills as adults. Throw in the fact that so many children have grown up in homes with parents who are unhappily married, and you have very few parents who are showing their kids what a quality relationship looks like. Just take the alarming statistic that if you are abused by your parents, you are more likely to end up in an abusive relationship.
This one stat alone shows the significant power our parents have on our dating choices. She struggled seeing the light again when it came to dating and falling in love. Although, she was a high powered lawyer, she felt her identity was lost because she was busy raising her children and trying to be a wife in a struggling marriage. And in a short amount of time, she found an amazing guy that is not only a great role model to her kids but also a wonderful life partner that supports her.
By teaching relationship tools in schools and at home, it allows for ALL children to learn what a quality relationship can look like no matter what their family upbringing is. As we just noted above the divorce rate is far too high in the US. That is because far too many people enter into marriages without really knowing what they require in a partnership to be happy.

But when the youth in question are on the spectrum, sometimes it can be all the more challenging to figure out whether—or how—to run interference. At her very first event, she felt attracted to a boy she met. Any teen might have tried these tactics, but the fact that Nina tried them all at once, right upon meeting Jason, and in the group activity setting was unusual.
They stopped participating in the group activity and acted like they were in their own private world. Working in residential and clinical settings with youth with ASD, we have observed that teenagers often have the desire to date but not necessarily the skills to make it work. We have heard older teenagers and young adults who have a limited number of peer relationships express an interest in dating, marrying, and having kids, but they cannot see a clear pathway to making those things happen for themselves.
We have seen some youth try online dating but not be able to get past the first date because they did not know how much or what to share about themselves and at what point in the relationship. Some end up feeling depressed when it does not work out, and blame themselves. In other cases, when relationships do get past the first date, we have seen youth start calling their partner multiple times a day, expecting immediate return calls, and not understanding how to give the other person space.

Teens and adults with autism who can communicate do make it known that they do, or would, enjoy a romantic relationship, as do individuals who are nonverbal. Knowing that you want to relate to someone is not that same as knowing how to relate.
Difficulties in verbal communication are not the only challenges to intimate relationships for individuals with autism. Other relational challenges include response to touch, emotions, and nonverbal behaviors such as eye contact. Communication can be as difficult for an adult with autism as it is for a child when it comes to being able to get needs met or being able to engage in casual conversation.
It would be faulty thinking to believe that early teaching about sex might encourage sexual experimentation. In reality, lack of knowledge might make them a potential sexual abuse victim.
